A few weeks ago I purchased a base model iMac Pro in store, so of course it came without a space gray Magic Trackpad 2. In my excitement to get the new machine, I totally forgot about the Magic Trackpad 2, and it didn’t fully dawn on me until later that there was no real way to acquire one from Apple after purchase. In fact, Apple explicitly states on its website that space gray accessories including the Magic Trackpad 2 are available only at the time of your iMac Pro purchase. So what’s a person who bought an iMac Pro without a Magic Trackpad 2 supposed to do? Does it mean that you’ll have to go through the annoying process of returning it and buying it again online in order to get one? Apple’s excellent customer support may be able to help. How to buy a space gray Magic Trackpad 2 The stipulation is, of course, that you have to already own an iMac Pro.
Apple asks for your device’s serial number in order to confirm the product you’re requesting support for. I didn’t ask, but I highly doubt if Apple would be willing to part with any space gray accessories if it doesn’t see that you already own the machine. After going to Apple’s support page for the iMac, and selecting the chat option, I was greeted by a friendly individual who was quick to help me and didn’t ask any weird questions about my request. Apple treats these requests like it does for standard repair requests, and will send you an email to confirm the purchase securely. Here is the basic process that I went through if you’d like to try it yourself: Step 1: Go to → Mac → Mac desktops → Other Mac Topics → The Topic is not listed. Step 2: Type ‘iMac Pro Space Gray Magic Trackpad 2’ and click Continue. Step 3: Select Chat and enter your iMac Pro’s serial number.
You can find it by going to → About This Mac. Step 4: Tell the support representative that you want to purchase a Space Gray Magic Trackpad 2 for the iMac Pro. The support rep was helpful, but quoted me the price for the silver Magic Trackpad 2 Step 5: If approved, the support representative will send you an email with a link to a special payment authorization page normally used for repair services. The space gray Magic Trackpad 2 is $149.00 plus tax Once the payment is processed, you’ll receive a follow-up email outlining your request for a replacement part.
My email noted in its description that my request was for a Missing or Wrong Item – Trackpad. From there it’s possible to track the status of the request like you would for any other Apple repair request. Since Apple normally sends out replacement parts with the expectation that you’ll return the faulty part, it charges an up-front “non-return fee” since I’m not replacing the Magic Trackpad 2, but outright purchasing one. Keep in mind that your mileage may vary, and that there may be a limited stock of iMac Pro Magic Trackpads available. Please be nice to your support rep, and if you aren’t satisfied with the first answer, try them again. Even though it’s in very fine print, Apple does say that these accessories are only available at the time of purchase, so technically they are doing us a favor by allowing us to purchase the space gray Magic Trackpad outside of the initial purchase window. I’ll be sure to update this post with images of the elusive space gray Magic Trackpad 2 after I receive it.
